A beloved Nintendo puzzle-adventure franchise is making its PlayStation 5 debut. The news comes with a brand new trailer confirming the release. Coming from developer Level-5, the upcoming game will finally end PlayStation fans’ nearly two-decade wait.
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam, the eighth main entry in the iconic Nintendo series, has revealed its release date trailer. The game will launch on PS5, alongside PC, Nintendo Switch 2, and Nintendo Switch on December 10, 2026, reports Gematsu.
The original Professor Layton game was first released in 2007 for Nintendo DS. All previous titles in the franchise, before New World of Steam, have remained exclusive to Nintendo consoles. So far, the franchise has sold more than 18 million units worldwide.

New World of Steam’s story is set in a Steampunk town named Steam Bison, full of inventions. It has surpassed even London in rapid development, thanks to the revolutionary steam technology.
According to an official description, “A mysterious incident in Steam Bison soon draws Professor Layton and Luke into their next great adventure.”
The trailer also reveals that the puzzle-solving adventure in the New World of Steam will get even better with puzzles designed by QuizKnock. It’s a media platform that intellectually combines entertainment and knowledge.
The game will bring back Hershel Layton, a Professor of Archaeology at Gressenheller University. He is a famous figure who has solved countless mysteries. The story will also focus on the puzzle-solving detective boy Luke Triton. His character has stood by Professor Layton through endless mysteries.
