Days after Bungie announced it was planning to bring back Destiny 2 and “evolve” Marathon, the studio revealed more about what the latter half of that plan means. In a lengthy blog post, the developer outlined plans for the next year of Marathon, including the addition of the game’s first dedicated and permanent PvE mode, a team deathmatch mode, and a friendly onboarding experience for new and returning players.
The multi-month plan to evolve Marathon focuses on transitioning the game from a “cutthroat, winner-takes-all PvEvP experience” to something that supports a broader audience, Bungie says.
“Some players want a quick, lower-pressure run after work,” game director Del Chafe III and creative director Julia Nardin wrote in a blog post. “Some want to spend an entire night with their crew. Others want to test a build, compete directly against other players, chase a difficult challenge, or follow a strange clue deeper into the ruins of Tau Ceti IV.
“Marathon needs to support all of them.”
After the Nightfall refresh arrives in Marathon in October, Bungie will move on to the game’s Symbiosis update, due in December. Symbiosis is a “significant step into the future” of Marathon and will include “more ways to play, more approachable ways to learn the game, and more opportunities to explore Tau Ceti IV in lower-pressure environments,” according to Bungie. Marathon’s first permanent PvE mode will be added as part of Symbiosis, offering a space where players can “explore, experiment, and take on challenges without worrying about being hunted by other Runners.”
Symbiosis, out Dec. 8, will also include a competitive Team Deathmatch mode, an expanded version of the beginner-friendly Perimeter map with “a significant visual overhaul,” and a new Shell, Bishop, which is described as Marathon’s high-performance robot samurai. “Bishop is a fast, surgical hunter-killer built around speed, surprise, and devastating bursts of melee damage,” Bungie says. “How that gameplay fantasy fits into your crew, and the role Bishop can play across Marathon’s different experiences, is something we look forward to seeing players discover for themselves.”
To welcome new players, Bungie is also working to improve the onboarding process in Marathon and give players a new social space with a built-in firing range.
The larger evolution of Marathon is due in March 2027 and will include, per Bungie:
- An interconnected system of permanent PvE, PvP, and PvEvP experiences
- A new onboarding experience
- A refactored Cradle and deeper shell progression
- More focused questlines and narrative
- New alien combatants
- An entirely new zone
Bungie says there’s more work to be done, and pledges to continue evolving Marathon throughout and beyond 2027.
Marathon launched in March and was warmly received by critics and players, though by Bungie’s own admission, the game was oftentimes too challenging and limited in what it offered, particularly to a broad audience. Bungie now says it wants to give players more than just a well-designed extraction shooter, allowing a broader audience to experience Marathon’s lore and gameplay.
Bungie promises more details on Symbiosis and Marathon‘s ongoing evolution in the coming months.
