Yesterday, EA announced that it’s closing BioWare, the studio behind beloved RPG franchises like the original Baldur’s Gate games, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Mass Effect, and Dragon Age. Alongside BioWare’s closure—and the cancelling of its next Mass Effect project—EA is reportedly laying off around 400 people in an effort to “align talent and investment” in the wake of its record-breaking private equity buyout.

While recent years have brought no shortage of high profile studio closings and game cancellations, the news of BioWare’s shuttering has prompted an outpouring of sympathies and frustrations from the fans, fellow developers, and former studio staff. Among those mourners is former BioWare game director and ex-general manager Casey Hudson, who reacted to the news on X to say that BioWare’s influence will continue even if the studio itself doesn’t.
