A popular Sonic game has received its first Year Two update, bringing in new modes and Sega cars. The developers shared details about the update in a PlayStation Blog interview.
The Year Two update for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds introduces several gameplay additions alongside vehicles inspired by Sega‘s classic hardware. According to the official announcement, the update allows players to explore the game with new racing features and a new competitive mode.
Originally released in 2025 for both PS4 and PS5, the game received “generally favorable” reviews on Metacritic. As of writing, it also holds an average rating of 4.57 on the PS Store, based on over 10,000 reviews.
What new modes and Sega-inspired vehicles are coming to Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds?
The major addition of the update is Duel Mode. It shifts the focus from the game’s standard 12-player races to tactical, one-on-one competition. Players must manage their distance from their opponents and decide when to use items. The development team said this lets races “unfold in entirely different ways.”
Gadgets also receive an update. The new Super Slot provides a dedicated space for one-slot Gadgets. Gadgets equipped in this slot receive enhanced effects, giving players more opportunities to experiment with combinations and customize their racing strategies.
The Sega Consoles Pack features three vehicles inspired by the Dreamcast, Genesis, and Sega Saturn. According to the developers, the pack originated as an April Fool’s joke. The team said they incorporated recognizable colors, shapes, and button layouts to preserve each console’s identity.
The Dreamcast vehicle features its familiar rounded design and distinctive color scheme. Meanwhile, the Genesis and Sega Saturn-inspired vehicles use angular silhouettes and more subdued tones. The team also recreated the Dreamcast’s Visual Memory Unit using original reference material from the era.
As for the game, Standard Edition costs $39.99, while the Digital Deluxe Edition and Year Two Digital Deluxe Edition are each $59.99 on the PlayStation Store.
