What’s in the new Overwatch season? Every two months, a new Overwatch season takes place, introducing new heroes, skins, maps, and more. At the beginning of the year, Blizzard wiped the seasonal numbering and established the narrative arc in 2026 as ‘The Reign of Talon’, marking a new era for the hero shooter.
There used to be big gaps between the launches of new Overwatch characters, but that has changed with The Reign of Talon. As for Overwatch maps, the release cadence isn’t as frequent, but there are map reworks to look forward to, in addition to brand-new releases.
New Overwatch season release date
Judging by the end date of Overwatch Season 2, the next season will likely arrive on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.
Blizzard usually teases details about the new hero in the weeks leading up to the new season. With Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest taking place on June 5, 2026, we wouldn’t be surprised to see something Season 3-related revealed at the event.
Overwatch Season 2 overview
Season 2 follows up the hugely successful first season with a DPS hero, arriving alongside a limited-time event, Operation: Grand Mesa, to help level up your Overwatch battle pass. Post-match accolades are back, giving both teams a chance to spotlight one of the best-performing players in the game. Map voting has been revamped to instantly select the highest-voted option if it receives more than six votes.
There’s been a lot of chatter among the community about the game’s balancing and how some older heroes have suffered from power creep in recent years. In response to this feedback, Blizzard reworked many perk options for the older heroes, all of which you can find the detailed breakdown in the patch notes released on April 17.
New hero
Sierra is the latest hero added in Overwatch Season 2, but she suffered from being undertuned at launch. After less than a week, Blizzard decided to give Sierra emergency buffs, improving virtually everything about her kit. This has seen her win rate drastically improve across all ranks, though it remains to be seen how high she climbs on our Overwatch tier list.
New maps
Overwatch doesn’t typically launch new maps on a regular basis, most likely due to the community shunning them in favor of the existing options.
In Season 2, Antarctica Peninsula received a rework, optimizing routes and sightlines to reduce visual clutter to a minimum. During this launch window, you’ll receive Competitive Points even if you don’t win, and you won’t lose as many points during a loss, helping you maintain your Overwatch rank.
Stadium changes
As for Overwatch Stadium, Season 2 is fairly light on changes, adding just two heroes to the game mode: Ramattra and Jetpack Cat, though the latter is scheduled for the mid-season update. Speaking of heroes, Juno received a rework to make her less of a must-pick.
Lijiang Night Market has been added as a Control map, and a rank decay system has been added instead of the seasonal resets that have been in place since the game mode’s launch.
New skins
There are several new Overwatch skin bundles available over the next six weeks: Sakura, Crimson Court, Rainy Day, Overwatch x Le Sserafim, and a Diablo collaboration. As always, you’ll need to check the store every week as these bundles cycle in and out with time. The Diablo crossover is the only bundle that hasn’t appeared so far, but we suspect it’ll show up when the Diablo 4 Lord of Hatred release date arrives.
More Mythic skins are being added, with Volted Overdrive Soldier 76 being the latest addition to the Mythic store. Genji has received a mythic weapon, the Sumi-ichimonji weapon skin that reacts with visual effects as you slash away at enemies.
