What are all of the League of Legends skin tiers, and how do you get cosmetics cheap? As Riot’s MOBA continues to expand, it’s a legitimate question to ask. I remember the good ol’ days when there were only Deluxe, Epic, Legendary, and Ultimate skins; now there’s Transcendent, Mythic Variants, Exalted – the list feels like it goes on and on. If you’re a returning player who’s wondering what the heck has happened, or a brand new one confused by all of the jargon, don’t worry: this LoL skins guide has you covered.
Over the past few years, Riot’s premium-level skin offerings have increased exponentially. Starting off with the divisive Dark Cosmic Erasure Jhin chroma, which is effectively a slightly snazzier recolor of Dark Star Jhin, we’ve seen the introduction of the Sanctum (which operates on a gacha-esque pull system), and the ever-polarizing Hall of Legends skins, which celebrate iconic League of Legends players, but have a staggeringly high price point.
On top of that, the original Prestige skin system has bit the dust. There are no more gold and white recolors of existing cosmetics: Prestige skins are now fully unique and one of a kind. Previous one-time Prestige skins, including the much-beloved K/DA skins, have two variants: one for those who suffered through the grind to get them the first time around, and a newer, updated version that’s available to buy. In short, there’s a lot going on, so let’s break it down.
All LoL skin tiers and how to get them
Here’s a full list of all the League of Legends skin tiers (listed from most expensive to least), and where you can acquire skins of that level. Note that there are some exceptions, which I’ll mention later on.
| Skin Tier | Acquisition | Cost | Unique Traits | Examples |
| Transcendent | Hall of Legends store | Between $50 – $500 depending on the bundle purchased. | All of Ultimate-tier level traits, unique gameplay elements, tied to external in-game and IRL events | Immortalized Legend Ahri, Immortilized Legend Kai’Sa |
| Exalted | Sanctum | 80 Ancient Sparks for guaranteed skin (400RP / $3.08 per Spark) | “Hyper-exclusive luxury items,” multiple forms, unique animations | Arcane Fractured Jinx, Revenant Reign Viego |
| Mythic Variant | Sanctum | 40 Ancient Sparks for guaranteed skin (400RP / $3.08 per Spark) | New voicelines, recalls, animations, and model changes to previously existing skins | Peacemaker High Noon Yone, Divine Architect Porcelain Aurelion Sol |
| Ultimate | Store, Hextech Chests, Loot Drops | 3,250RP / $25 | Complete re-imagining of the character with new, unique mechanics (evolving skins that change form, for example) | DJ Sona, Elementalist Lux |
| Mythic | Mythic Store, Mythic skin tokens | 100 Mythic Essence (earnable currency) | Enhanced animations | Sunken Shadows Nami, Hextech Poppy |
| Prestige | Mythic Store, paid battle pass completion | 150 Mythic Essence, or 1,650 RP / $12.96 for battle pass | Gold and white variation of an existing skin with a unique border, VFX, and splash art | Prestige K/DA Akali, Prestige True Damage Senna |
| Legendary | Store, Hextech Chests, Loot Drops | 1,820RP / $14 | Complete re-imagining of the character with new animations, visuals, sounds, voice lines | Primordian Aatrox, Spirit Blossom Ahri |
| Epic | Store, Hextech Chests, Loot Drops | 1,350RP / $10 | New model, animations, visuals, sounds, some new voice lines | Firecracker Ashe, Dark Star Karma |
| Standard | Store, Hextech Chests, Loot Drops (effectively retired) | 975RP / $7.50 | Simple model changes, some unique animations | Moo Cow Alistair, Definitely Not Blitzcrank |
| Budget | Store, Hextech Chests, Loot Drops (effectively retired) | 750RP / $5.77 | Simple model changes | Little Knight Amumu, Sweetheart Annie |
There are, of course, some exceptions to these rules. Some older Ultimate skins (Gun Goddess Miss Fortune) are a little cheaper, and event-only skins like Pax Sivir, Pax Jax, and Pax Twisted Fate are now inaccessible. The original launch and beta skins, including Black Alistair, Silver Kayle, Young Ryze, and King Rammus are also unobtainable via any means.
Riot is also no longer releasing Standard or Budget skins, with these primarily being obtainable via the store or Hextech Chests. Epic-tier skins are now the lowest level of purchasable skin.
Which League of Legends skins are currently on sale?
Now, I’m pretty guilty of buying League of Legends skins, and while I did check how much I’d spent on the MOBA once, I have no plans to do so anytime soon – the psychic damage was real.
If you’re more responsible than I am, I’d advise getting skins when they’re on sale as part of the weekly store rotation. Here’s what’s currently on sale in the League of Legends store:
- Mecha Kingdoms Darius – 1,350RP
- Immortal Journey Zaahen – 975RP
- Pentakill III: Lost Chapter Sona – 944RP
- Battle Principal Yuumi – 877RP
- Broken Covenant Miss Fortune – 810RP
- Battle Bunny Aurora – 810RP
- PROJECT: Naafiri – 742RP
- Arcanist Kog’Maw – 742RP
- Splendid Staff Nami – 675RP
- Coven Cassiopeia – 675RP
- Odyssey Kah’Zix – 607RP
- Star Guardian Zoe – 607RP
- Pool Party Mundo – 390RP
- Dragonslayer Jarvan IV – 375RP
- Arctic Warfare Caitlyn – 337RP
These skins will be on sale until Monday May 18 at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm BST / 7pm CEST.
It’s worth noting that you can also unlock champions in the store using RP, but I would advise against doing so. You’ll earn enough skin shards and Blue Essence to fill out your own unique roster pretty quickly, so save your RP for skins.
When is the next League of Legends Your Shop?
League of Legends’ Your Shop is currently live. You have until 9am PDT / 12pm EDT / 5pm BST / 6pm CEST on Tuesday, June 2 to grab your discounted skins. I hope yours was better than mine this time around.
So that’s everything you need to know about League of Legends skins, their tiers, and how to buy them. You can also check out our dedicated League of Legends Mythic shop guide if you want to keep up with the latest rotation.
