Happy Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls day to all who celebrate. Arc System Works’ new superhero anime fighter launches on PC and PS5 later today (at 11 a.m. Eastern, to be specific), and soon fighting game fans will be pitting Marvel’s many heroes against each other in fast-paced 4v4 combat. One of the heroes in that roster is Deadpool, and the merc with a mouth has a reputation for his fourth-wall-breaking antics. Arc System Works has woven that into his kit by making him an amalgamation of fighting game history.

Arc System Works has released a lengthy character breakdown trailer that runs through all of Deadpool’s moves. If you have even a passing knowledge of fighting games, you’ll probably recognize some of his moves from games like Street Fighter, Virtua Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, and also several of Arc System Works’ own games like Blazblue and Dragon Ball FighterZ. There are so many nods to fighting game history that it’s hard to catch them all, but thankfully Twitter user Whisp90 made a video compiling them all, complete with visual references to each.

Deadpool wasn’t playable in the Marvel Tōkon beta, so most folks will get their first hands-on time with him later today. I’m still getting used to the 4v4 tag elements of the game as someone who typically plays fighting games as a one trick, but Deadpool is definitely going on my team alongside Star-Lord, Black Panther, and either Captain America or Spider-Man. Still figuring that fourth slot out. Though maybe I’m just in a Spidey mood after seeing Spider-Man: Brand New Day last week.
