The Octopath Traveler series hit its 8th anniversary in July, and Team Asano recently addressed the future of these HD-2D role-playing games during a chat with Japanese website Dengeki Online.
After releasing the prequel title Octopath Traveler 0 last year, the developer is well aware of the excitement for “Octopath Traveler III” (even though nothing has been officially announced at this point) and realises there are already incredibly high expectations from the fanbase.
Producer Tomoya Asano expanded on this, stating the team realises it “cannot simply release something half-baked” after strong sales of the first game (reaching seven million copies to date) and now that the scope of HD-2D games has expanded. So a third major entry needs to be something very ambitious, but right now, the developer apparently has nothing to share.
“If we’re going to do it, we’re going to push the limits…keep looking forward to what comes next.”
Team Asano recently worked on the HD-2D title The Adventures of Elliot, and is currently helping out with Final Fantasy Resonance, due out later this year. It’s got some new content in the pipeline for Octopath Traveler 0 as well.
Last month, Square Enix also announced Octopath Traveler 1 & 2 would be getting a Switch 2 release this October.
