Fans of Bungie games can rejoice as the PlayStation Studios developer has given a major update on its existing games. In the near future, Bungie plans to release Destiny 2’s vaulted content to players, along with a new strategy for releasing Marathon content.
In a new video, Bungie studio head Poria Torkan and Marathon GM Josh Deane laid out the studio’s upcoming plans. The two acknowledged the studio’s failure to communicate effectively with fans and promised sweeping changes to its content pipeline. They also apologized for ending support for Destiny 2 and announced that Bungie plans to continue creating new content and games set in the Destiny universe.
However, Bungie also acknowledged that bringing back vaulted content from Destiny 2 will require significant work. “Changes made to Destiny 2 since Beyond Light require us to update lighting, encounters, combatants, and other underlying systems,” the developer revealed. More details on release plans will come later.
As for Marathon, the developer revealed that it will “expand Marathon to a deeper survival experience.” This includes updates to core components and balancing changes, while ensuring it remains accessible to players who prefer PvE, PvP, or PvPvE.
Recent studio changes help explain Bungie’s new direction
Bungie’s new announcements come on the heels of major layoffs at Bungie in recent months. Following the announcement that Destiny 2’s live-service support will end this year, Sony laid off many developers who worked on the game. Sony also revealed that Marathon, Bungie’s latest live-service shooter on PS5 and other platforms, did not meet financial expectations.
At the time of writing, Bungie has not announced a Destiny 3 nor acknowledged any plans to make a sequel.
The vaulted content planned for release for Destiny 2 includes The Red War, Curse of Osiris, Warmind, and Forsaken. Destiny 2 originally launched on the PS4 in 2017. Its latest expansion, Renegades, was released in December last year, with the latest update, Monument of Triumph, released earlier in July.
Destiny 2 is free-to-play on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S. Marathon is also available on the same platforms.
