Rockstar Games has shared new details about GTA VI’s weather system, teasing how changing climatic conditions will shape the world of Leonida. The game’s dynamic weather and its transitions across different locations have already sparked plenty of discussion among fans.

In a new cover story from Game Informer, the developer has confirmed that GTA VI will feature extreme atmospheric conditions. That includes localized tropical storms and full-blown hurricanes across the large map.

Fans were surprised by the addition of hurricanes in the upcoming game. Reacting to this, @nothaileybrooks wrote, “Omg, that’s gonna be SO realistic,” and said they need a “whole new hurricane survival kit.”

Another player, @adv_vkr, reacted, “Hurricanes in Vice City? Driving just got way more dangerous.” Meanwhile, this fan, @realdreafox praised the creators for their work on designing real-life conditions and described the new mechanics as a “game-changer.”

@BRK_rmfc highlighted the game’s weather engine and wrote, “GTA 6 is really going all-in on realism. Dynamic hurricanes and tropical storms are going to make Vice City feel absolutely wild.” Similarly, @Wench_bbg asked, “Imagine you’re running from the police and a hurricane kills you instead.”

GTA 6’s localized storms and dynamic weather are more than visual upgrades

The GTA 6 weather system is designed to make it feel like a real part of the world rather than a simple background effect or toggle off/on. Rain can be localized, meaning one area of Leonida will have a rain shower, while the other remains sunny.

Players will see NPCs get drenched in the rain and can also spot small puddles near lamp posts and around street corners. The wind system has also received significant attention. Gusts can move hair and debris across rooftops, ripple water, and bend grass in Leonida’s swamps.

“We have re-engineered our weather system to make everything much more localized and persistent and really wanted the world to feel dynamically solid and achieve a sense of scale we haven’t felt before,” says Tom Shepherd, co-studio head at Rockstar San Diego.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S on November 19, 2026.
