We saw many things during Grand Theft Auto 6‘s weird Netflix reveal, and it’s official: GTA is simmy now. The gendarmes will meticulously document your physical appearance, and escaping them will necessitate changing it up. Jason and Lucia will also, the prophets tell us, feel the effects of sleeplessness and bad diet, just like mortals.
One thing we haven’t seen from official sources: cars needing petrol. That particularly sim-ish feature has only been part of contraband GTA 6 leaks. Nevertheless, I have completely internalised this mechanic into my vision of the game. If you can’t trust anonymous online weirdos trying to flog you some crypto thing, who can you trust?
So, naturally, I had to incorporate a working gas mechanic into my ongoing quest to turn GTA 5 into GTA 6 or kill it by trying. I installed Fumes – Animated Persistent Fuel, whose functions are thus: “Every vanilla and online vehicle carries a real fuel tank. It empties as you drive and it is still empty when you come back to that car tomorrow.

“Refuelling is not a menu,” it says, casting subtle shade on all those non-hardcore car-gassing mechanics out there. “Get out, walk to the pump, take the nozzle off it—it goes in your hand and the hose comes with you on a real physics rope.” Yes. All of these things are refuelling, to me.
It works like this: on your minimap, while driving, a new meter now tracks how much petrol your car’s got left in it. Run out, and your journey’s at an end. You know, like how cars work.
This was difficult to test. As we’ve already well-established, my current installation of GTA 5 is a nightmare merry-go-round of frictionless cars and increasingly contradictory mods. To actually acquire a car, I first had to figure out how to make one stop, and how to make sure it did not get immediately detonated by the hordes of hitmen and ambient gang violence that have become the burden of my Los Santos life. It’s harder than it sounds: even throwing myself beneath a car’s wheels didn’t really help. Yes, the driver would get out to ask if I was okay (I was not), but the car would keep going.
I eventually commandeered one, however, by teleporting (Franklin can teleport now). The mod worked! Also, numerous other mods I already had installed kept throwing errors, which is probably fine. But amid the error messages and chaos, I managed to make it to a petrol station, in order to test the mod’s robust in-person refuelling mechanics.
Never mind.
