Throughout the weekend, the Pokémon Worlds Championships returned to San Francisco. An officially run competition and celebration, it didn’t take long to embody all the highs and lows of pocket monsters. Fans of all ages arrived in droves, more than the Moscone Center can apparently accommodate. One of the biggest draws outside of the competition had to be unceremoniously cancelled after fire marshals reportedly deemed it a hazard.

Divided between 12 stations, the official pin rally encourages fans to scope the halls and trade enamel Pokémon pins with staff and other attendees. Similar to stamp rally programs at parks and conventions with a merchandising twist, the lure of exclusive goodies was destined to draw huge crowds. Too huge. Fans were dismayed to discover on Saturday morning that the pin rally stations were closed. Many assumed Pokémon Worlds ran out of collectibles after the first day. Apparently the truth wasn’t the lack of supply as much as the masses of demand.
Sunday morning, an email confirmed that the pin rally would not be returning. The reason appears to be overcrowding. Attendees say an inspection from the fire marshal deemed the swell of people to be a catastrophic hazard in the event of an emergency. One fan claims that the marshal threatened to shut the entire event down if Worlds didn’t address the situation. Attendees have been quick to notice how intense the turnout is at the event. In one photo, user monicant posted a picture of the line for a Jirachi pin, showing an unending sea of people congesting the entirety of the route between convention halls.

Overcrowding is an all too common issue at even smaller conventions, but the gathering at this year’s Pokémon Worlds seems to be causing major disruptions. Earlier in the event, competitors Luca Ceribelli, Ruben Gianzini, and Luca Lussignoli were barred from the championships for helping people cut in line. Pokémon events have become a frenzy, whether its official gatherings or restock day at Target. The frenzy of unwavering popularity and an increasingly manic secondary market has left little breathing room for non-insane fans. It also illustrates that the Pokémon Company itself may be unprepared to manage its own popularity.

As we’ve already seen at other official events, and can already tell from emerging eBay listings, those who did manage to secure enamel pins early in the event will almost certainly take advantage of their high profile scarcity.
