What’s better than being a weird, vampire/human hybrid? Being a weird vampire/human hybrid with friends! Thanks to a new Blood of Dawnwalker mod, you can now play Rebel Wolves’ debut RPG in split-screen co-op, allowing you to “share one screen and explore Vale Sangora together.” That sounds good to me.

Created by the aptly named ‘MrSecondPlayer,’ who’s also released a mod that adds co-op play to Frostpunk, ‘Dawnwalker Together’ has a relatively simple premise: add multiplayer to the game. Just like the good ol’ days, your screen will be split horizontally, with one player on the top, and the other on the bottom. One player will be using mouse and keyboard, while the other will need to use a gamepad. From here, you’ll be able to explore to your heart’s content.

The mod is still in its alpha phase, and MrSecondPlayer highlights that this isn’t online co-op. “The game was designed for one player, so quests, story scenes, menus, saves and many combat systems still assume that only Player 1 exists,” he writes. The combat and independent movement are also still in the experimental phase, but are included in the current iteration of the mod.

Dawnwalker Together requires a Windows copy of the game, so it’s only available on PC. You’ll also need a compatible copy of UE4SS, alongside a working keyboard and mouse, and an XInput-compatible controller for your second player. You can download the mod here, but as always, back up your saves to ensure that you don’t lose any data.

Note that, while there’s a tag on the mod saying that it includes AI content, this appears to just refer to the cover illustrations for the Nexus Mods landing page.

MrSecondPlayer’s been busy post-Dawnwalker, and has also created a target lock on system, various addons that decrease the spawn chance of wolves and wild boar, and one that allows you to replace them with human bandits. We’ve also seen other modders remove the game’s time tracker, letting you explore at your own pace without worrying about the impact on your family.

Dawnwalker released just nine days ago (you can read our review here), but it’s already got a thriving modding community. That’s a good thing – mods are a core part of why Baldur’s Gate 3, Skyrim, and the various Fallout games have stayed alive. It bodes well for Rebel Wolves, and with more Dawnwalker saga games in the works already, I’m excited to see what the future holds.
